Video interviewing tips and practice

  • Live Video Conference Interviews – Similar to an onsite interview, only it’s done long distance via videoconferencing. Preparation can increase your chances of success.
    • Tips:
      • Know your technology. If conducting from home, test things out a few days prior to ensure its work properly.
      • Raise your camera to eye level so it’s flattering rather than distracting.
      • Remove other distractions such as clutter and anything messy in the background.
      • Help ensure you will be seen and heard clearly - remove noisy distractions (pets, etc.) and test that your video can be seen and heard.
      • If you were invited to conduct the interview from the employer’s office or another outside location, arrive early and ask for assistance on how the equipment works.
      • Want to practice? Consider asking your coach to conduct a mock video interview.
  • On-Demand Video Interviews – different from a video conference interview in that it’s not happening live. It’s a one-way interview where the hiring company sends you questions they have recorded for you to answer and then in return you record your answers and send back.
    • Tips:
      • Approach the interview the same way you would an initial phone screen - prepare, practice, relax.
      • Do a test run. Test your technology as you would with live video conferencing – choose the best browser and internet connection option.
      • Ensure your camera angle is at eye level. A poorly placed camera can be unflattering and distracting.
      • Pick a room with a background that is pleasant and not distracting (i.e. a cluttered room or noisy location).
      • Confidence and authenticity is key. Be yourself. You don’t have to be perfect and over scripted. Relaxed, confident and authentic is what you’re going for.
